"Shiroshima" means "white stripe" in English. That is, there are 3-10 white stripes in a leaf, just looks like a white leaf really. According to the description by Dr. Hata Okamura, it appeared during a recovering from flowering death of H. tranquillans which is growing at Mt. Hiba in Shimane prefecture. As shown at picture, this is really an excellent bamboo in its leaf color. Then, very hardy and strong for drought, even its culm reaches to 3m high. Especially, it grows very well under sunshine and beautiful at parks and gardens. It should be focussed to be ornamental plantation. |
