"Kan" means "cold" in English, because the sprouting of this species starts in late autumn to winter.

Culm is generally 2-3m high, but sometimes higher under good soil and warm weather conditions.
Diameter is slender as 10-15mm and slightly swelling in nodes.
Culm color is typical like reddish or purple tinge.
Leaves are very small as 6-15cm long and 8-12mm in sidth, and very thin.

This is widely cultivated for dedge plantation and gardens in central Honshu and southward where are warm districts.

Culm is good to use for the materials of bamboo handicraft and decoration materials for furnitures.
