Japanese name "Shiho" means Square, because the shape of this culm is square.
Such square culm is really fantastic, not in accordance with common sense of bamboo.

Culm is 5-7m high and 3-4cm in diamete and internodes are spinulous, thus rough to the touch.
Then, many aerial roots are shooting from tha basal nodes of culm.
Bamboo shoot appears from the autumn to winter in Japan.

This is very popular species to be planted in gardens and parks.
It is said to be ingroduced species from China.
